Naturalization Requirements In addition to the three-year or five-year waiting period after getting a green card (unless you’re applying for citizenship based on eligible military service), you must meet the following requirements to become a U.S. citizen:

1. You must be at least 18 years old.
2. You must have continuously lived in the U.S. as a green card holder for at least five years, or three years if married to a U.S. citizen.
3. You must have lived in the state where you plan to apply for citizenship for at least three months.
4. You must have “good moral character,” meaning your behavior meets the standards of the average citizen in your community. More specifically, you must not have any serious criminal record (like murder, illegal gambling, or intentionally lying to the U.S. government to gain immigration benefits) before applying, and you must not lie during your naturalization interview. This is determined by the government on a case-by-case basis.
5. Criminal records such as illegal gambling or intentionally lying to the U.S. government to obtain immigration benefits, and not lying during the naturalization interview. The government will review compliance with this requirement on a case-by-case basis.
6. You must pass a two-part naturalization test: an English language test (covering reading, writing, and speaking skills) and a civics test (covering U.S. history and government).

8. If you’re male and lived in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 25, you must have registered with the Selective Service System.
