I. The nature of visas
The J1 is a nonimmigrant exchange visitor visa that allows participants:
- Education, training, research and other activities in the U.S.
- Maximum stay depends on the type of project (from 4 months to 5 years).
- Spouse and children under 21 years of age may accompany you on a J2 visa (except for some programs).
II. Project details
- Au Pair:: Requirements 18-26 years of age with childcare experience; maximum time limit 2 years; 6 college credits required
- Summer camp counselor:Fluency in English required, 18 years of age or older; maximum 4 months; no logistical duties
- University Student Programs:: Proof of full-time enrollment; maximum 2 years; intercollegiate cooperation agreement required
- Physician training: Pass USMLE; maximum of 7 years; "Certificate of Need" from home government required
- Professors/academics:: Non-tenure track faculty applications; maximum time frame of 5 years; no repeat participation within 24 months
- High School Student Program:: 15-18 years of age in school; maximum 1 year; homestay compulsory

III. Five core requirements
- Qualifications: Academic/work experience documents (to be notarized in English)
- financial security:: $1,800/month base funding certificate (2023 standard)
- non-immigrant orientation: Need to prove binding return (e.g., real estate, job offer, etc.)
- Appointment of guarantor agencies: Must apply through a State Department-certified Sponsor
- medical insurance: Coverage for the entire period of stay in the U.S. (minimum coverage $100,000)
IV. Six-step application process
- Matching sponsoring organization: select a State Department certified Sponsor (e.g., CIEE, InterExchange, etc.)
- Obtaining Form DS-2019: "Certificate of Eligibility" issued by Sponsor
- Completion of Form DS-160: Online Nonimmigrant Visa Petition Submission
- Payment of fees:
- Consular interview: you need to bring: original passport; DS-2019 form; proof of financial resources; evidence of binding to return to your home country
- Entry Activation: Issuance of I-94 Record Card
V. Key considerations
